Commemorative Air Force Announces 28th Annual Air Show

Memorial Day Weekend Airshow

Wings of Freedom: Salute to Veterans

On Memorial Day weekend, May 26 - 28, the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) will once again bring our incredible story of patriotism to the Red Wing regional airport and present "Wings of Freedom: Salute to Veterans." This three-day educational spectacle will be presented as a tribute to the country's men and women in uniform.

Our theme this year is "First to Fight". We will be commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor, The Doolittle Raid, The Battle of the Bismarck Sea, D-Day, and many other events from WWII till today's War on Terror, complete with the explosive thunder of flaming pyrotechnics. The air show will also have dramatic fly-bys and static displays of aircraft representative from each war.

Also featured, the amazing performances of Iraqi Freedom Veteran and F-16 pilot John Klatt, flying his Staudacher S-300 and Darrel Massman demonstrating the absolute limits of flight in his remarkable Panzl 330 custom-built unlimited monoplane. Each day, our show will conclude with the Aerial Ballet of Julie Clark in her World Famous Mopar T-34 to the sounds of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A.".

This educational event is not just about the hardware. "We're here to honor and thank the veterans who have served this nation," said Kent Smith, air show director. The CAF invites veterans of all wars to participate in the show. Members of the First Shot Club, The Flying Tigers, Doolittle Raiders, 82nd and 101st Airborne, will all be present. This Living History Presentation brings a vivid perspective to events straight out of the history books and gives the audience a chance to meet the actual people who made it happen!

On May 26, local schools are invited to enjoy the CAF Education Day. Special presentations by the Living History Personalities will offer a unique opportunity for students to learn about history from the very people who created it. Saturday and Sunday are very full days with plenty to see and do from the Opening Flag Raising to the Closing Ceremony.

Volunteer opportunities abound and provide an inside look at one of the Midwest's greatest presentations of Living History. Families, groups and individuals are all invited to join in this tribute. Volunteering to work at the Wings of Freedom Air Show is a great way to get involved in a really fun event. While you are participating you can feel, hear and see the excitement all around you.
